This summer Lance brings you:
How many English entertainers can sell out a show twenty five years after they have passed away? William Shakespeare seems to be doing well for himself of course. John Lennon tributes can draw a crowd. What about John Betjeman?
Yes, the late great poet laureate is still selling out theatres today through actor Lance Pierson’s one-man show The Best of John Betjeman. Why does Betjeman retain such affection from the British public?
Partly because of the number of strings to his bow as travel-guide writer, television personality, conservation champion and of course the 20th century’s best-selling English poet. Through his poetry you can best see why the English love him so much: passionate about the countryside, the opposite sex, whimsical and nostalgic, hilariously funny, always self-deprecating and deeply honest.
Even today as Britain pushes forward into the 21st century it is Betjeman standing tall (as a statue) at St Pancras International Station as new Britons head off to see Europe. The Best of John Betjeman is a celebration of the man who saved St Pancras and gave joy to millions through his poetry.
