Lance Pierson performing

Lance specialises in bringing the Bible to life. He uses his acting skills to communicate the truth and excitement of the Christian faith through serious bible performance and entertaining one-man shows. He has been called 'The Walking Bible' as he learns and acts out any part of the Bible to help bring out its meaning. He also runs training events to help churches make the reading from the Bible a high point in all services and meetings.

Lance has performed for a huge number of Christian gatherings from different denominations and locations. These include Spring Harvest, New Wine, the Keswick Convention and Greenbelt. He has also given Bible Reading training at the London School of Theology and for Scripture Union. He has performed his one-man shows at many churches across the country including St Paul's Cathedral, All Souls Langham Place, Mutley Baptist Church in Plymouth and St Paul's Elim Church in Carlisle.

Bible Performance is Lance’s speciality. He believes that we have a powerful resource in God’s word and that so often we lose all of its power because it is read in a routine manner. Lance is on a campaign to make the Bible reading a highlight wherever it is read. He offers four things to achieve this:

The Walking Bible

Lance feels his true gift is Bible performance, so he offers to learn and then perform any passage or passages of the Bible for your event. He passionately believes that the reading of the Bible should be the highlight of any gathering where it is read. This is an ideal way to make use of Lance in addition to a one-man show.

In addition to straight Bible performance, Lance has a wealth of resources at his disposal. So to help a speaker he can also illustrate a Bible passage through poetry, stories and sketches. Lance is a very experienced Bible performer and he has been asked to do Bible readings at Spring Harvest, the Keswick Convention, Easter People and NEAC.

Bringing Bible Readings to Life Training

The Bible reading usually happens in our church services in a routine fashion, with no thought of making it special, and it therefore has little impact. Lance believes it can and should be a high point of the whole service, if done with reverent imagination and the prayer that God will speak through it.

Lance's winsome ability to make a passage of Scripture come alive meant that the people I was preaching to were already fully engaged with the passage even before I got up to speak. Mark Greene, Director, London Institute of Contemporary Christianity

To achieve this, Lance runs an envisioning and training event, available in 4 lengths:

  • 40 mins - 1 hour Talk and talkback. Suitable for conferences, groups of church leaders, etc.
  • 2 hours Taster Includes a short practical exercise; suitable for an evening for a church's regular Bible-readers
  • 4 hours Trainer Includes more demanding exercises with feedback, and time to plan for the future; suitable for a Saturday for several churches in an area.
  • Full day Total Bible experience! Includes one-man performance by Lance, a good way to help the day finance itself; suitable for a group of churches, or as part of a church weekend

The Gospel in Art

Here is a powerful way of visualising the Gospel story. Lance uses all his experience to read stories from the Gospels accompanied by pictures of paintings which depict incidents from the story.

The Gospel in Art can be used as part of the Bringing the Bible to Life Training. But it can also be used in services, retreats or other Bible presentations in its own right.

The 90-minute Bible

In a TV age, most people are more used to seeing things on a screen than reading them in a book. Many find solid print off-putting and will not naturally read the Bible for themselves. This one-man show takes the Bible story off the page and brings it alive in the words and actions of a storyteller. Sometimes Lance reads or acts out the Bible's own words, at other points he uses other people's retellings in stories, sketches or poems.

The show contains pieces by Keith Waterhouse, Frank Topping, Charles Causley and Dave Hopwood and is a fast-moving presentation, vivid and varied, enjoyable and exciting. The emphasis is on humour and drama, but the mood also swings to awe and wonder. The show always includes some participation, but in an all-age setting, Lance increases the proportion of this.

Obviously the subject matter appeals most directly to Christians, and the show certainly helps those who have little idea how the whole Bible hangs together. But it has also proved very effective as a gently evangelistic presentation to people on the fringes of church life. It is ideal as an Alpha supplement: if people are starting to find out about the Bible, here is the whole story at one sitting. The show can be shortened to suit your event and Lance has performed 60, 50 and even 20 minute Bibles!
